It's hard to make sense of things, when someone you love is there one day, and gone the next.

You walked into French class not so long ago, looking very, very fine and taking quite afew of our breaths away. I assumed straight away that you were going to be an arrogant jock, too good-looking for his own good, but you ended up being all of the opposite. There are so few guys who have been quite so considerate, charming and caring as you have been, yet many have on first glance misunderstood you for someone quite different. We've had some good times together, you and I. You were such an intelligent boy, and we always had great conversations. You always made me laugh, it was very easy to make me smile. Yet somehow, there was always a part of you that remained sad, that kept you in the dark, and from time to time it took you away from us. It wasn't always easy to understand, but you always came back. Going away for good was never part of the bargain.

I am in Paris now, and just this morning, I was thinking of you and how much you loved this city. It's so beauiful, and I can finally understand why you had so much affection for this place, why it was here that you felt free and happy. Yet now, for me, Paris will also always be the place where you broke my heart. Hours later, I'm still reeling from that call, the pieces have yet to glue themselves together, my eyes have yet to dry. Too many things today have served as a constant reminder of the fact that you are no longer here. From that wine and cheese basket that looked so much like the one you and Eva made for my birthday, to the little stuffed crocodile a kid was carrying in her pram, which reminded me of the 'hall-warming' present that I bought for you. Not to mention the very face that it was you who sat down with me and helped me plan my french adventure.

It is so hard to come to terms with this, and cliched as it is, there is nothing I wouldn't give to wake up tomorrow and find that this has all been a bad dream, and that you are live and well, and that I will see you when I return. You sounded happier, more hopeful in the last message you sent me. I wish you had held on, Eli. There is a sense of helplessness, being so far away from our friends at a time like this. I want that one last chance to see you, to laugh with you, to tell you that I'm here for you, whatever comes your way. I am sorry that there were times where I was afraid of your darkness, and stayed away because I didn't know what else I could do to help. I wish I could have been stronger for you. There is nothing I can do but feel the pain of your loss, cling on to the memories we've had together, and pray that wherever you are, you are happy and that you have been released from the chains that held you down in this life.

I wish you had taken a leap of faith instead of that jump to your death.

I hope that wherever you are, you find peace, and are released from the chains that kept you struggling for air in this life.

Rest in peace, Elisha Chng. You will be missed so much.

Lyon is France's 3rd most populated city and is a hotspot for art and food. It was very easy to see why!

Les Halles are where one gets the finest of all glorious, edible goodness. Lyon's Halles delivered!!

Pastry shop with the most amazing macaroons and lemon tarts in the world.

Mouth-watering fruits. Seriously, I've never seen fruits look so good.

Off to the land of chocolates, watches and diplomacy!

Our first stop was a photo exhibition of wars taking place around the world.

Quite a sombering start to the day, but well worth it.

One of many Chocolatiers in the city. There was a little factory inside which we'd wanted to visit but didn't know we had to make prior reservations for a visit.

Grenoble is an extremely flat piece of land, but surrounded all around by mountains. We took a train ride along the mountain path to breathe in the beautiful scenery up close!

God Save the Queen(and the taxpayers' money..)

The English Monarchy is part of England's rich and proud heritage. While in London, we visited three of the most spoken of royal homes.

We're going to London to visit the Queen!

First stop: Windsor Castle
The largest inhabited castle in the world, and the Queen's personal favourite. One of three of her private homes.

This building opposite the cathedral, is where apparently special knights lived. Everyday their duty was to go to the cathedral and pray for the King, who was usually too busy shagging his consorts and beheading people to make it to church enough to salvage himself of his sins.

There was a fire in Windsor Castle in 1992, but was not restored till 1997 because the Queen, who has money flowing out of her ears, felt it was not her duty to pay and insisted on the state taking care of it. There was no way the government would have gotten away with an addition 40 million pounds spent on the Queen so they decided to open up the palace to tourists to gather the money to fund the restoration.

A Palace Guard. I felt so sorry for the young lad, looking quite the fool while everybody stood next to him, taking photos while he looked clearly uncomfortable. I decided to spare him and gave him one less photo opportunity with yours truly.

Next off: Buckingham Palace

Everyone knows this one. It's actually not that impressive! But with the number of people taking photos outside the palace and hanging around waiting for signs of royal life, I felt distinctly sorry for Harry and William, having to deal with this every day of their life.

I ONLY came here to see the furry hats and red uniforms, but apparently they don't wear that in spring.

These lovely creatures stole quite a bit of attention from the palace.

Finally: Hampton Court Palace
Former residence my favourite King, Henry the 8th. Now, this is a castle. Simply marvelous!

The sprawling gardens of the palace was the best part.

Singapore Day!

The story of how we got to Singapore Day is one that would compel anyone(but the three of us) to slap us for being so nonsensical. To make it short- after missing trains, losing tickets, alot of running, and very good humour at our self-created mess, we got to Hampton Court Palace, cursing the government for choosing such a ridiculously faraway location(stunning nonetheless) and laughing at our own misfortunes. We were there for all of twenty minutes in our attempt to prevent the rest of our tightly packed schedule from railroading as had the first half of our day. Of course lady luck had other plans for us and our entire day more or less ran off the tracks, but it was probably the best day of our entire trip! Thank goodness for being able to laugh at ourselves!

"Okay, let's split up, grab as much food as we can and get out of here. Objective: FOOD. and then RUN"

The girls get out first, while I'm still in the Satay Queue, determined to get my ten sticks of Chicken and Mutton Satay.

I get to the front of the queue, and they're serving out free portions(!!) but only one portion per person!!!
With doe eyes, I ask the Satay Man, "Please sir, can I have more than one portion?"
"Sure, you can get two!" YES!
I grab the food and run out in disbelief to catch up with the rest.

HAHAHHAHAA. It's one stick a person! I'm sorry I ate the other stick while I was run-laughing out of the garden!

In the end we missed the train anyway, and were late by fifteen minutes for the musical(Hair Spray) but got let in anyway. I then proceeded to leave my Singapore Day goodies, and all my written and stamped postcards in the theatre, only to realise this at the postbox outside the Natural History Museum we proceded to after, only to find that it was already closed. -_-

If we got one thing right that day, it was getting to our Singaporean restaurand.

Bath and Stonehenge

We took a daytrip to the quaint city of Bath, birthplace of Jane Austen and those lovely novels of hers, as well as to Stonehenge.

The drive there was long but gave us the chance to enjoy the green English countryside.

The natural hot springs were well utilised by the Romans, who created a public bathing complex and gymnasium here. Pity we couldn't go for a dip, the water is pure anymore because it's current open-air status encourages micro-organisms to grow in there and make the water toxic.

Stonehenge- I have always wanted to visit this site, for the plainly ignorant reason of always having found it the pretties Windows default wall paper on the computer. Of course there are more intelligent reasons why one should come here, but my choice was really first and foremost based on this riduculous childhood fantasy over these magical stones in the middle of nowhere.

A UNESCO World heritage site, the Stonehenge dates back to 2500BC, was a burial ground and was used to tell time according to the position of the sun over the rocks. The weight of each rock is so heavy that up till the 197os, no crane technology could lift it. So how did anyone transport these blocks at the time to the middle of nowhere?

Easter Weekend Part 1 - Mas de la Chapelle

This weekend we were in the beautiful city of Arles. Unfortunately for us, the weather was highly unfavourable and most of it was rainy and cold, therefore squashing many of our ourdoor plans this weekend. Thank goodness we had a Heaven-on-Earth hotel to enjoy.

This peaceful abode was a former priory belonging to the Knights of Malta, and was restored and transformed into a beautiful sanctuary and hotel by a historian and archiect who fell in love with its charm.

Réserve Africaine de Sigean

Just a few km off Narbonne is the Sigean African Wildlife Reserve. We were really excited about coming here, but it didn't look like it was going to happen because, as in many small cities in the South, transport by anything other than cars is non-existent. Taxi drivers were quoting us damaging prices to bring us there and back. Finally, after a dramatic and sorrowful explanation of how we had come all the way from different parts of the world just to see the reserve, without any clue that there would be no cheap modes of transport to take us there and we would be so very upset and depressed if we didn't get the chance to go, a kind taxi driver took pity on us and offered us a 'student discount. It was well worth any cost, because it was absolutely beautiful, and well, as close as I'm going to get to a real African reserve in a while!

The Sigean African Wildlife Reserve is a huge wildlife park located south of Narbonne, with more than 4000 animals. With 300 hectares of land, the conservation park has tried to recreate the natural habitat of wild animals and has been open since 1968.

We went first on a guided tour in a van along the 'wilder' parts of the park, where animals roam freely and occasionally, the curious ones came up to the van for a closer look. We took a short walk around the park as well, enjoying the sun, animals and the beautiful landscape.

Vineyards in Boutenac, Narbonne

Last weekend, some friends and I took a train to Narbonne, down in the South of France, to visit the vineyards and learn about wine. We stayed in the small town of Boutenac, where wine is a way of life!

We went off-season so the grapes had not grown out yet. Harvests take place in August/September every year.

Château la Volle-Gasparets - a family run winery where we had our wine tasting session.

Wine is stored in these barrels for about a year.

Rosé. I bought back a bottle of this for 5 Euros!

Taking a walk around the little town. This is the town church. Apart from the church, there is only a small grocery store and a hairdresser.

Since transport back to the town was non-existent, we packed our days and spent our two nights with our hosts, or back in our room playing cards.

The Cathédrale of St Just and St Pasteur. This is the most magnificent church I have ever seen in my entire life. The interior was breathtaking and I really wish I could have taken photos inside.

Hôtel de Ville - it literally means City Hotel, and you find them in each city. I thought it literally meant it was a hotel and was sorely disappointed when I found out in fact, that it was the city hall. All the ones I've seen so far have been beautiful and I had secretly hoped to stay in one during one of my trips.

Last Sunday I spent the day with some of my Polish friends at Annecy, an hour(by car) North of Grenoble. Annecy was once part of Geneva and home to the Counts of Geneva and the Princes of Savoy.

When the sun comes up, out come the people! Unfortunately it was one of those days where the sun was out but it was freezing cold. I was deceived that morning into thinking it was going to be a nice, warm day and I wore far to many clothes. Result: I spent the whole day freezing or trying to find random warm spots under the sun to thaw out.

Since spring is here, the snow is already starting to melt.

Special snow shoes called Raquettes that prevent you from sinking into the snow. The snow was so soft and melty that we did get stuck in it half the time nonetheless.

Towns in Provence

We drove through the region of Provence to get to Cote d'Azur and stopped at a few picturesque towns along the way.

Our first stop was in Sisteron, an old fortified town with alot of Romanesque architecture.

The restored citadel which the Germans had used as a strategic base and prison, till it was destroyed by the Allied bombers towards the end of the second World War.

Next stop, Entrevaux! A medieval village surrounded by a river and the Provençal mountains.

Our last stop was the town of Saint Paul de Vence. It's a really beautiful village in Provence, with plenty of galleries and pieces of art, with a beautiful view of Provence and the Riviera!

Cannes

We stopped by Cannes for a few hours on the way back to Grenoble. For all the supposed glitz and glamour of the city, it was probably the least exciting of all the places we'd visited in the French Riviera. For poor students with no money to gamble at casinos, and the absence of stars to stalk, (the film festival is not for another few months) there wasn't much to do besides wander the streets and look hungrily into expensive restaurants.

Corso Carnavalesque - The Nice Carnival Part I

We were in Cote d'Azur primarily the famous Nice Carnival, which rivals the ones in Rio and New Orleans. The carnival dates back to the 13th century and is heavily influenced by Catholic tradition. Held every year just before the period of lent, the carnival was meant to entertain the kings and to give the people of the city a chance to indulge in heavy merry-making before they did their penance for 40 days during lent.

Here are shots of the Corso Illuminé, a parade of colourful costumes, confetti and towering harlequins that moved around the famous Place Masséna and Promenade des Anglais in the city. It was quite magnificent!
